Billiani was founded in 1911 to manufacture curved, cane-wood chairs. The family business was located in the heart of the post-World War II chair district: the brothers Ottone, Orlando, Lino and Bruno Billiani were the protagonists of the business during the years of economic recovery. In 1986, a third generation joined the company and Billiani became synonymous with seating for large orders, especially for foreign projects.

Towards the end of the 1990s, Luigi Billiani, named after his grandfather and a graduate in architecture, decided to include design in the company's repertoire, and together with his wife Veronik Romanutti, they created Billiani in its current form.
The stand presented at the 2002 Salone del Mobile in Milan was provocative under the banner of design: it was designed by Marco Ferreri, who was also the creator of the chair nominated for the Compasso d’Oro award. While the connection to tradition was ensured by the projects of the master Werther Toffoloni, the collaboration with Emilio Nanni opened a new era: colorful, pop, carefree. The list of works expanded, and some pieces even ended up in museums, from MoMA in New York to the Triennale in Milan.

In 2019, Cristina Celestino, a Milanese architect and designer, was appointed as the company's artistic director. The chair continues to play a central role, as does the material: wood, the true leitmotif of the collection.

Billiani's work is intertwined with the local production context: a guarantee of quality, but also an investment in the supply and manufacturing chain, because each innovation increases the overall expertise of the entire area.

Flexible manufacturing and fast response times are the primary characteristics needed in the world of contract projects, which today require much more: customizability, the ability to interpret a concept in a complete product range, attention to detail, solidity and durability.

Wood is not only their chosen material, but also the basis of a philosophy inspired by sustainability.

They use exclusively FSC® and PEFC certified wood for their products, two international standards that guarantee responsible plantation and forest management.
